Do you sometimes get lost in all the different coffee varieties available? We've listed them for you:
Espresso-based drinks
- Espresso: A concentrated shot (25-30 ml) brewed under high pressure, characterized by a layer of crema.
- Ristretto: A "restricted" espresso with the same amount of coffee but half the water, resulting in a more intense flavor.
- Lungo: An espresso where two to three times as much water is forced through the ground coffee.
- Americano: A shot of espresso diluted with hot water (usually 1 part espresso to 2 parts water).
- Long Black: Similar to an Americano, but the espresso is poured over the water to preserve the crema.
Milk varieties
- Caffè Latte: One part espresso with three parts steamed milk and a small layer of milk foam.
- Cappuccino: Traditionally consisting of equal parts (1:1:1) espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.
- Flat White: A double shot of espresso (often ristretto) with finely textured microfoam, but less foam than a latte.
- Cortado: Espresso "cut" with an equal amount of warm milk to temper the bitterness.
- Macchiato: An espresso "stained" with just a small spoonful of milk foam.
- Caffè Breve: A variant where the milk is replaced by half-and-half (cream and milk).
- Mocha: A combination of espresso, chocolate syrup or powder and steamed milk.
